Woman Made Well

The Who? What? Why? of Postpartum Depression

Candice Wood Episode 3

Welcome back to Woman Made Well! Today, I’m opening up about my personal journey with postpartum and the emotional rollercoaster that often comes with motherhood. As someone who helps bring babies into the world, I felt a pressure to be the “perfect” example for my clients. But my experience was far from smooth, and I realized that so many of us face these same struggles.

In this episode, we’ll dive into postpartum depression, exploring its risk factors and why it happens. I break down the three main categories that contribute to postpartum depression, shedding light on why the transition into motherhood can feel so overwhelming. Together, we’ll explore questions like: Why is motherhood so hard? What sets us up for these feelings?

I also discuss the impact of hormonal changes, the shift in daily responsibilities, and the weight of self-imposed expectations. For many of us, there’s a deep sense of mourning for our pre-motherhood selves, which can be hard to navigate but is so important to acknowledge. And of course, we’ll talk about the lack of sleep—a major factor in postpartum mental health and recovery.
